My mom is a very special lady. Next Tuesday is her birthday and I thought I would write a little pre-birthday post about some of the things I appreciate about her:- My mom is a great listener! I was quite the talker as a child & teen – I still am, really! – and my mom was always good at just listening. I’m sure I was quite boring or exasperated her at times with all of my talking, so I appreciate that she was always ready to listen.
- My mom never pushed us to do anything we didn’t want to do. While we were always encouraged to do our best and try anything, we were never pressured to do activities or sports that didn’t interest us.
- My mom provided us with stability and consistency – she was always there! My mom didn’t work and stayed at home with my brother and I. As a kid I didn’t understand how hard that must have been for her at times since my Dad frequently traveled and we moved around a lot, so my mom’s main source of socializing was my brother and I. She was also an excellent room mother (do they even have those in elementary schools anymore?!) and never missed any thing we did.

After being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years, my mom entered the workforce when she and my dad divorced and has been extremely successful at starting her career late in life. She is a manager of a large department at a major university and serves as the President of the Faculty-Staff Senate at the University. In fact, last week my mom spoke on behalf of all state employees before the Kansas House of Representatives special committee on pay.
Here is a picture of her (second from the left) with some of her coleagues and the chairman of the committee she spoke in front of.
I love you Mom!
