Boston – Days 1 & 2

October 26, 2011

We had a fantastic time in Boston. Fun…refreshing…charming…historic…just a few words that I would use to describe the week. We were grateful for the time away together, and while we missed LP & Shep, we knew they were having fun back at our house with my mom.

Warning – the text is a little verbose, but I wanted to document our trip for my own benefit to remember, so if you want, just skip to the pictures.

Last Friday I flew out to Boston with my co-worker, Sarah, to set up our hospital’s presentation at the National AAP Convention. Ryan stayed at home with the kiddos and my mom drove in from Kansas that afternoon…RC flew out the next morning and joined me, but before he arrived Sarah and I had a few hours before bedtime to find some fun and good eats! The bummer thing about flying to the East Coast from Denver is that it takes an entire day to travel…the flight out there was 4.5 hours and we lost two hours in the process – blah! As RC always says, East Coast time is our least favorite (after living in it for almost two years in So. Florida)…there wasn’t much daylight left by the time we flew in and got checked in to the hotel.

The first hotel of our vacation was in downtown Boston, about two blocks from Boston Commons – it was beautiful and ended up being a fantastic location for getting around the city. We walked from the hotel a couple of blocks and found a tasty casual, local place called Max & Dylans Kitchen Bar where we grabbed some lunch. Next door to Max & Dylans was one of my favorite finds of the trip – Brattle Book Shop, one of America’s oldest and largest antiquarian bookstores. In fact when I wandered around the area on Saturday morning (before RC flew in), the Book Shop had set up an outdoor book sale and I snagged a couple of 1st editions for fun and decor at home…one for me that made me chuckle reading through it, Patterns of Mothering (1956…I got my copy for $4, not $65 like it is listed on Amazon) & the other book is about a young boy on an adventure that I got for Shep’s room on a little display shelf. It would be heaven for my librarian friend Allison.

That morning I also enjoyed sipping on some coffee from Boston Commons Coffee while walking through Boston Commons and catching some of the first stops along the Freedom Trail before needing to head to the Convention Center for our presentation. After RC landed we headed to the North End and enjoyed some fine Italian food at a charming little spot called Assaggio. It was seriously delicious, quaint and came with great service. We briefly considered waiting in line at Mike’s Pasty or Modern Pastry (which I was told by a co-worker who lived in the North End for 10 years that Modern is even better…), but it was Saturday night with lines that were nearly 2 blocks long and we decided to just come back another day and we called it a day.

That bookshop will be on the itinerary for our next trip for sure!! We searched all over for the perfect old bookshop that I just KNEW would be in Boston. We finally found one that was fine, but I wish we had found this one!
